Sound Blaster X-Fi & Quake 4 - Open AL "Generic SW"

If you have Quake4 and a Sound Blaster X-Fi card, you may find when selecting Open AL "Generic SW" in the game's audio Settings section, that the game returns you to the desktop. Subsequent attempts to start the game fail.

If you encounter this, we recommend the following:

  1. Restart your system
  2. Open Windows Explorer.
  3. Browse to c:\Programs Files\Id Software\Quake4\q4base
  4. Delete the file "Quake4Config.cfg".
  5. Launch Quake4
  6. Select OpenAL \Sound Blaster X-Fi from the game menu

Note: OpenAl Generic SW will not unleash the full power of the Sound Blaster X-Fi therefore we don't recommend using the Generic SW option when running Quake4 with a Sound Blaster X-Fi .
